There was a buzz around the team on Saturday before the game against Chatswood Premier at Primrose. Whether it was the sunshine and beautiful setting, or the fact we had a youngish team (good for us old blokes), or for the second game running Raj turning up early or whether it was the return to action of two club legends Lynchy and Ravel – it was hard to tell. But everyone was pretty pumped up when we took the field after losing the toss. The grins on the faces of Ravel and Lynchy as we walked out to field was contagious !
And it was an excellent start against a team who’d beaten us twice this season – with Romo and AB opening the bowling, keeping the brakes on and taking wickets – supported by some great fielding. Romo finished with 3-22 and AB 3-16 (2 catches for Dylan impressive behind the stumps and one for Ravel). Chatswood were 6 down for about 40 after 14 overs. Shero once again bowled a good spell (4 overs, 1 for 4) and Lynchy marked his return with the terrific figures of 4 overs, 3 for 5, progressively getting quicker with each over….. Chatswood were rolled for 57 (in 26 overs). Without doubt our best session in the field all season (and possibly our loudest, with constant enthusiastic support from Ravel, something we’ve missed in recent years!).
Fair to say we were pretty confident at the innings break - someone called out “is there a happy hour at the Diddy” ! Shero more cautiously warned against complacency - “Let’s not make this game interesting lads”. Cagey & Ravel opened and batting carefully on a slow pitch saw off the opening bowlers. Cagey was then out LBW (plumb) and Riordo joined Ravel, who was starting to find his feet and the middle of the bat. The result was never in doubt, and Ravel (who finished on 42no) hit 3 sixes in a row to take us to victory in the 18th over.
A fantastic win and an early start at the Diddy.
A shout out to Ravel’s grandpa who’s been our number one fan for a few years now. Although not able to make it to the game, he’s been following the team’s progress through the match reports and on the internet. This photo of the team after the game is for you Frank.
Moving forward this is the state of play in the comp. We’re now off the bottom and closing in on Rebels and the kids.
The top three are nailed on for Finals and the 4th spot is between the other 4 teams. Basically, we need to win all three games to be guaranteed 4th spot.
