Match Report Week 18 v West Pymble Dreggs at Artarmon

Saturday’s game against top of the table Dreggs was rendered a little less important late last week when we heard that one of the teams that had already qualified for the Finals (GenX Royals) had been docked 21 points.  This meant that next week’s game against West Epping basically became a play-off for 4th spot, irrespective of the result against Dreggs

The scores for the game on Saturday looked close, but to be honest the scorebook flattered us a bit.  Dreggs batted first and whilst we contained them at the start and the end of their innings, two batsmen scored 50s after tea and took the score to 7/181 – a good total on a slow outfield and long boundaries. Pick of the bowlers without doubt was Romo who took 3-14 in his seven overs (his 20th wicket of the season) and Dhruv also bowled well with 2-21. There was also a cheeky little back handed run out of the non-striking batsman from Ravel and Gelo nonchalantly took a fine left handed catch above his head.

Chasing, we lost wickets at regular intervals and were never really in the game, though Sharpy hit a nice 33 and Riordo batted beautifully for 52 (3 x 6, 2 x 4) – his second 50 of the season.  Dhruv batted well at the end (25no, 1 x 6, 2 x4) but the game was gone, although there was time for Gelo to paddle a single around the corner, to probably the loudest cheer of the day, only to be run out a few balls later.   We reached 8/160 – but some gentle bowling at the death helped us get to that total.  We’ll need to do a bit better if we reach the SF when we would play Dreggs again.

So, two games to go before the Finals. If we win next week against West Epping we are guaranteed 4th spot. Lose and we’d need to beat Rebels last game and hope West Epping lose.  Next week’s game is crucial.
